Carol Bove

SIXTH LIGHT BLUE SWEATER PAINTING
2016
acrylic on canvas
48 x 60 x 1 3/4 inches

Organic materials and forms fuse with minimalist geometry in the work of New York artist Carol Bove. The elegance and simplicity found in her sculptural work made from industrial materials can also be seen in her recent series, the Sweater paintings. To make these works, Bove places chainmail on the paintings to mask off the surface, leading to minute variations where the “stencil” has allowed more color to pass through. The resulting pattern of wavy lines mimics a knitted sweater and undulates within the blue canvas, highlighting the chainmail’s fluidity. The overall size of the piece juxtaposed with the minuscule patterning plays up the internal scale of the work, drawing the viewer in while simultaneously dwarfing them. Bove has exhibited internationally, with works included in Documenta 13, the 45th Venice Biennial, and the 2008 Whitney Biennial.
