Brian Calvin

SUNNY
2015
acrylic on linen
30 x 40 inches

At once awkward and touching, LA-based Brian Calvin’s works frequently take the form of portraits of contemporary youth, often paused, lethargic, and caught between moments. His painting technique and mood are casual and loose. Calvin’s recent works feature a cartoonish pouty mouth – here in close-up with the lips passively open, gap between the teeth, and tongue pressed forward. Calvin drains the image of its commercialized sexuality, offering up a thoughtful, unselfconscious image that (in part due to the suggestive title) is reminiscent of the sun setting over a landscape. Calvin’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
