Andreas Eriksson makes paintings that allude to ideas of the sublime in Northern European painting. His studio, which is located deep in the Swedish countryside of Medelplana, serves as inspiration for his work. The natural surroundings experienced on a daily basis provide a rich source material for his acutely atmospheric paintings. Here, Landscape (Medelplana), is painted with loose yet assertive brushstrokes of rich earthy colors. Each hue exists in its own plane, yet synchronizes with the rest to construct a staggering composition. The final work sits somewhere between abstraction and landscape painting, creating a mysterious window to the outside world that feels simultaneously perplexing and familiar. Eriksson has had recent solo exhibitions at Bror Hjorths Hus, Uppsala; Lidköping Konsthall; MUMOK, Vienna; and the Nordic Pavilion, Venice Biennale. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the 30th São Paulo Biennial; Amos Anderson Konstmuseum, Helsinki; Stenersen Museum, Oslo; The Nordic Pavilion, 54th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale; Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Wien; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; 5th Nordic Biennale of Contemporary Art, Moss; Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm; and Kunstmuseum, Bonn.
