This pair of works by Adam Winner take their title from the twins of Greek and Roman mythology who, among other tales, were the patron gods of sailors and horses. Here, the twin paintings mimic each other in their concentric, U-shaped compositions, though subtle differences appear in the brightly-colored lines and torn edges of the layered canvas. Undoubtedly, Winner’s geometric composition is indebted to Frank Stella’s iconic Black Paintings which, through their predetermined system of concentric black brushstrokes, became an important catalyst for Minimalism. Winner’s works, however, add an awareness of process and material through layers of palette-knife applied paint, chattered lines, torn edges, and gunked-up surfaces. Winner’s work has been featured in gallery shows around the US.
