Belgian artist Luc Tuymans is widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s. His sparsely colored, figurative works speak in a quiet, restrained, and at times unsettling voice, and are typically painted from pre-existing imagery which includes photographs and video stills. His canvases, in turn, become third-degree abstractions from reality and often appear slightly out-of-focus, as if covered by a thin veil or painted from a failing memory. There is almost always a darker undercurrent to what at first appear to be innocuous subjects: Tuymans has, in this way, explored diverse and sensitive topics including the Holocaust, the effects of images from 9/11, the ambiguous utopia of the Disney empire, the colonial history of his native Belgium, and the phenomenon of the corporation.

Born in 1958 in Morstel, near Antwerp, Belgium, Tuymans was one of the first artists to be represented by David Zwirner. He joined the gallery in 1994 and had his first American solo exhibition that same year. In 2012, Luc Tuymans: Allo! inaugurated the gallery’s first European location on 24 Grafton Street in Mayfair, London. Luc Tuymans: The Summer is Over marked his tenth solo show with the gallery, which was on view in New York January 10 – February 9, 2013. The show is accompanied by a publication that features a detailed overview of each of the artist’s exhibitions with the gallery since 1994, a conversation between the artist and David Zwirner, and interviews by Lynne Tillman with Madeleine Grynsztejn, Brice Marden, Helen Molesworth, Peter Schjeldahl, and Robert Storr.

An upcoming solo exhibition of the artist’s portraits is planned for September 2013 at The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas. His work was recently the subject of a retrospective co-organized by the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It traveled from 2010 to 2011 to the Dallas Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. Previous major solo exhibitions include those organized by the Moderna Museet Malmö, Sweden, in 2009, and Tate Modern, London, in 2004. Other recent solo exhibitions include the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2011); Haus der Kunst, Munich; Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw (both 2008); Műcsarnok Kunsthalle, Budapest (2007); Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal; and the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva (both 2006).

Tuymans is the curator of the forthcoming exhibition at the Albertinum in Dresden, titledConstable, Delacroix, Friedrich, Goya. A Shock to the Senses (March 16 – July 14, 2013). In 2009, he organized The State of Things: Brussels/Beijing at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, which traveled to the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, and A Vision of Central Europe at the Brugge Centraal, Bruges, Belgium, in 2010. A catalogue raisonné of the artist’s paintings is currently being prepared by David Zwirner in collaboration with Studio Luc Tuymans. Compiled and edited by art historian Eva Meyer-Hermann, the catalogue raisonné will illustrate and document approximately 500 paintings by the artist from 1975 to the present day.

The artist represented Belgium at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001) and his works are featured in museum collections worldwide, including The Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Tate Gallery, London. Tuymans recently donated his portrait of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands to the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. He lives and works in Antwerp.

As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2013, distinguished artist Luc Tuymans will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of his continuous support of amfAR’s programs. The presentation of this award will take place during a brunch on October 27, 2013, hosted by Amy and Vernon Faulconer and Cindy and Howard Rachofsky. TWO x TWO is honored to have Luc Tuymans as the featured artist of our fifteenth year of this endeavor. On behalf of amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art, we extend special thanks to Luc, David Zwirner Gallery and Zeno-X Gallery for their extraordinary support of this event.

Past honorees have included renowned artists April Gornik, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel, Joel Shapiro, Cecily Brown, Tom Friedman, Elizabeth Peyton, Jim Hodges, Peter Doig, Christopher Wool, Mark Grotjahn and Richard Phillips

Born in Massachusetts in 1962, Richard Phillips lives and works in New York. He is known for his strikingly distinctive paintings. Drawn from found imagery, his work deals with the marketability of man, his wishes, ideas, actions, identity, sexuality, politics, and desires. He translates these images into both drawings and paintings executed through a traditional process. In doing so, he makes use of the iconic quality of pictures, which the media and Art use daily – each according to its own agenda. His recent exhibition, Most Wanted at White Cube in London, for example, featured ten larger than life celebrity portraits set against red carpet step-and-repeat backdrops.

Perhaps more so than any other contemporary painter of his kind, Phillips’ imagery has achieved a level of pop recognition outside of the art world with fashion, media and film collaborations. He has contributed to the television show Gossip Girl, MAC Cosmetics, The Art Production Fund, and Visionaire. He recently appeared as a guest judge on Bravo’s new TV series “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist”.

Phillips has exhibited his work in many individual and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe, including important survey exhibitions and catalogues at Le Consortium, Dijon in 2004; Kunsteverin in Hamburg in 2002, and Kunsthalle Zurich in Zurich in 2000. He is represented in public and private collections such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Denver Museum, CO; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; UBS Paine Webber Art Collection, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Modern, London; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Recently Phillips has begun to explore filmmaking and photography as a means of moving beyond found imagery in his paintings. His images have appeared in Elle magazine and Lotus magazine, and will be featured in upcoming issues of Vogue China and Visionaire. He completed his first film entitled Lindsay Lohan in 2011. Phillips considers the film a “motion portrait” of the actress that “at once reveals an emotional awareness of her recent past and, in the most positive terms, expressed the limitless creative potential of her art joined with her unparalleled beauty.” The film premiered at the 2011 Venice Biennale in tandem with his second film, Sasha Grey. His third film will premiere at Art Basel’s Art Unlimited exhibition in Basel, Switzerland this June.

As part of TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art 2011, distinguished artist Richard Phillips will receive the amfAR Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS in recognition of his continuous support of amfAR’s programs. The presentation of this award will take place during a brunch on October 21, 2012, hosted by Amy and Vernon Faulconer and Cindy and Howard Rachofsky, and sponsored by Flexjet, to whom we offer sincere appreciation. TWO x TWO is honored to have Richard Phillips as the featured artist of our fourteenth year of this endeavor. On behalf of amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art, we extend special thanks to him and Gagosian Gallery for their extraordinary support of this event.
