HORROR VACUI

2012
purple stoneware vessel
22 1/4 x 18 x 18 inches

Copenhagen-based Morten Løbner Espersen explores the vessel in all of its variations, from the functional to the aesthetically elegant. Espersen says, “Clay is my material of choice, because it contains so many possibilities: a plastic, amorphous material of incomparable formability that can be fired into imperishable, precise forms.” The non-representational work Horror Vacui references the bulbous, sensuous sculptures of Henry Moore and playfully hints at human heads and fingers hidden beneath a purple glaze. Espersen’s work is included in public collections such as the Birmingham Museum of Art; Design Museum Denmark; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.
