HANDMADE FULL COLOR SPECTRUM RADAR REFLECTOR FOUND NEAR THE MOCKINGBIRD FLOWER MARKET

2015
steel, aluminum, galvanized wire, and acrylic and enamel paint
33 x 64 x 2 inches

Nathan Carter’s HANDMADE RADAR REFLECTOR works take the form of colorful mobile sculptures made with metal shapes, often discarded scraps the artist finds in the street. The rough paint application gives them a naïve, playful feel and the impression that they were made by a crafty child or obsessive outsider artist. A lyrical line quality and meticulous arrangement of shape and color give the work a strong, balanced composition and sense of purpose, as if it were the imagined version of a real, technical device, perhaps the nautical “radar reflector” in the title. Carter’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions at institutions in the US and Europe.
