WEST WALL

2014
acrylic on canvas
88x 67 inches

Tony Matelli makes incredibly versatile work that manipulates the physical world. Through various creative endeavors, he manages to profoundly reorient the viewer’s perspective and state of being. In the painting West Wall, from a series of works in which Matelli makes rubbings of his studio wall, he manages to render a psychedelic reality by making the mundane visible. By using indexical information of the brick walls from his studio, Matelli presents a personally striking and active composition that radiates with saturated colors. Tony Matelli’s work is in numerous public collections, including Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills; FLAG Art Foundation, New York; ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum; National Centre of Contemporary Art, Moscow; Fundacion La Caixa Madrid; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and Uppsala Konstmuseum, Sweden. Recent solo exhibitions have been presented at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. A mid-career survey, Tony Matelli: A Human Echo, premiered at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Denmark, in 2012 and traveled to the Bergen Kunstmuseum, Norway, in 2013.
