oil, spray paint, glue, and staples on canvas, and artist made frame from cardboard

Belgian artist Michiel Ceulers explores the process of painting by questioning its principles and abandoning the traditional do’s and dont’s. His unconventional investigation of paint, color, and light is manifested in dirty marks, pressing wet paintings onto wet paintings, and cutting older works and re-attaching them, all combined with traditional application techniques and materials. Here, Ceulers roughly stretches the blue and black canvas to a frame, on which he rhythmically collages fragments of blotted rectangular canvas. The final work is a powerful abstraction full of attitude and prowess. Ceulers lives and works in Berlin. He has had exhibitions at Le Routier, Ghent; Barbara Seiler, Zurich; Bonnefanten Roermond; Schou Ort, Zurich; Gemeentemuseum Den Haag; and Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.
