Emily Sundblad

GRID

2010
oil on canvas
17 x 13 inches

In addition to being a painter, Swedish born Emily Sundblad is a singer, collaborative video artist, actress, and co-founder of the experimental gallery Reena Spaulings. As a painter, Sunblad has a worry-free attitude that yields a mature, yet ingénue, approach. Here in Grid, she paints her preferred subject, the flower, in a window box, playfully addressing the idea of “painting as a window on the world.” Like most of her work, Grid is a beautifully fresh reflection of her involvement in the art world and the fast pace of New York daily life. Emily Sunblad lives and works in New York. Her work and performances have been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; P.S.1., New York; West London Projects; Musee D’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Musée des beaux-arts du Ottawa; and Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, to name a few.
